Sports movies are one of my favorites and so are Christian movies. When you combine the two, even when the emphasis is not specifically on the sport, I'm doubly interested. I was recently blessed with the opportunity to review "Abel's Field" starring Kevin Sorbo and Samuel Davis. This movie touched my heart and inspired me at the same time.
Abel's Field DVD
AFFIRM Films/Provident Films
Released January 22, 2013
Left motherless by tragedy and abandoned by his father, high school senior Seth McArdle (Samuel Davis) faces enormous pressure as he strives to support his little sisters. At school, he endures the daily bullying of the football team. But fighting back only finds him singled out for punishment and assigned to an after-school work detail under the supervision of the reserved groundskeeper, Abel (SOUL SURFER’S Kevin Sorbo). Much to his surprise, Seth discovers that Abel may be the only one who truly understands his struggles. As dark times lure Seth toward desperate measures, the reluctant Abel may be the one person who can point him back toward the light.
Here is a trailer for the movie
My Thoughts
This movie was engaging from the beginning and all the way to the end. The character of Abel is a man of few words, however behind his wall, lies a man of inner turmoil due to his past. Seth is a kid who is desperately trying to care for his twin little sisters and to save everything he has. Shunned by his dad and even his older brother, Seth is determined to make a life for himself and his sisters but his pride keeps him from seeking much needed help.
This movie has action, humor and drama. The characters are real and I found it easy to identify with them. The story shows that even though it feels like the world has let you down and you feel as if it's all caving in, there is always hope. This story is heartwarming, inspiring and shows us that by leaning on Jesus, you are never alone.
You can purchase this DVD at most online retailers such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble.
