I received this book recently for a review. As you readers know, I'm a big fan of Christian books and read both fiction and non-fiction books by various authors. I was quite excited to read this book since the author speaks of the goodness of Jesus, holiness in stubborn places and the relief from burdens, addictions and heartache.
The Utter Relief of Holiness: How God's Goodness Frees Us from Everything that Plagues Us
Written by John Eldredge
Released January 8, 2013
About the book (from Goodreads):
What a relief it would be to be set free from all that plagues us -- the inner struggle with anger, or contempt, the habitual sins. Is such an experience possible? John Eldredge believes it is, and in THE UTTER RELIEF OF HOLINESS, he shows readers how they can be that free, through the healing work of Christ in their lives. It begins when we discover what the salvation of Jesus Christ means for our own restoration and find that holiness is an expression of the healing of our humanity.
Here is a book that explores the beauty of the genuine goodness available to us in Jesus Christ, and guides the reader through the process whereby God makes us whole and holy by his love. Readers will be relieved. Utterly.
About the Author:
John Eldredge has written 12 books, including "Beautiful Outlaw" and New York Times bestsellers "Wild at Heart" and "Captivating" (written with his wife Stasi). His books have sold more than 8 million copies. He is the Director of Ransomed Heart, a ministry devoted to helping people discover the heart of God. It has become a grassroots phenomenon with millions of followers.
Eldredge has devoted his career to helping people find the restoration that is available in Jesus Christ. In "The Utter Relief of Holiness" he sows how we can share in that "beautiful goodness."
My thoughts:
This was the first time I have read a book by John Eldredge but I have read many good reviews across the Internet. The book is written in two parts; "The Surprise of Holiness" and "The Way to Holiness." The first part focuses on being set free and Jesus goodness among other topics. The second talks abut how to get there. Each chapter within these parts has a powerful message that will really speak to you.
Here is a quote that got me: "Jesus can heal what has gone wrong inside each and every one of us. He does this by imparting to us His goodness. God makes us whole by making us holy, He makes us holy by making us whole." Wow.
Sprinkled with scripture and Biblical examples throughout, John talks about how freeing it would be to be released from the bondage of things like jealousy, anger and addiction. As the book says "it would be an utter relief. An absolute utter relief."
I believe most of you readers would enjoy reading this book. At the end of the is a daily prayer of gratitude to Jesus.
